Missing edges

Dear WOFTW,

I noticed that my edges have been receding and I’m not sure what to do. I relax my hair and also put in braids and weave to protect my hair. What can I do to stop this from happening?

Missing edges.

Dear Missing edges,

I find that one of the most common causes of hair loss, especially edges, is braiding that is too tight. Our hair strands can only handle so much pressure before its breaks or simply let go from the root. The weight of the braid and how tight the hair is gathered into it causes the hair to be pulled out. With regards to weaves, be very careful that the glue used is carefully removed as not to pull out your hair. Constantly repeating this process will lead to permanent hair loss in those areas. The first step is to stop the braiding and weaves, especially in the front, for a while. There are many products to help with hair growth. You can purchase hair growth oils and moisturizers and even castor oil to help. Use them as directed and make sure to massage them into the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles. It’s not just about treating the problem from the outside, but also from the inside. A multivitamin with a higher level of biotin would help as well. All of these items can be purchased all around Kingstown in beauty supply stores and pharmacies. Try these steps and you should see results in a few weeks.
