Help! I Need a Job – Part 7

As we wrap of this series of articles, lets recap a few must do’s in order to have a successful job search. Until you find a paying job, your full time job is to find a job. Develop a schedule and stick to it. Here are 22 ways to help you land a position.

1. Be prepared. Do your research about the company and the position{{more}}

2. Know what you offer. Be able to speak about your skills and experiences and how they relate to this new position

3. Develop a strong resume/CV that highlights the problems you’ve solved and what you can offer your new company

4. Offer an error free resume/CV and bring 3 copies

5. Network. Let friends and family know you are looking for a job and tell them what kind of position you seek

6. Find ways to volunteer in the community to stay busy. Job hunting can be depressing after a few unsuccessful months of looking. Stay focused

7. Arrive on time to the interview (at least 5-10 minutes)

8. Dress appropriately. You are selling your mind and skills not your sense of fashion or your figure

9. Show a positive attitude despite how you may feel

10. Give a firm handshake and maintain eye contact throughout the interview

11. Leave your cell phone at home or turn it off

12. Go alone to the interview. Do not bring a friend for moral support

13. Do not smoke or drink alcohol before the interview

14. Be polite to the receptionist, you are being watched as you wait to go into the interview

15. Avoid talking negatively about your previous supervisors

16. Know how to answer common interview questions. ( e.g Tell me about yourself. Why should we hire you ? What are your strengths and weaknesses? )

17. Absolutely no lying. Tell the truth, anything but the truth can come back to hinder you later

18. Don’t ask about salary too often or too early. The interviewer may think you do not care about the job

19. Avoid telling jokes. You may be funny at home but the interview is not the time to tell off color jokes or make fun of others

20. Control nervous habits like fidgeting. It’s a distraction and may make your interviewer uncomfortable

21. Always have a few questions prepared to ask the interviewer

22. Send a thank you note after the interview.
