Rangers retain VPL championship title
Botanical Garden Rangers retained the Dream 11 Vincy Premier League (VPL) T/10 title last Sunday night, April 20, 2025, at the Arnos Vale Playing Field, ekeing out a nine-run win over Grenadines Divers.
Invited to bat, Rangers, the 2023 winners posted 115 for 6. Andre Fletcher and Keron Cottoy, both hit 33, with Kenneth Dember striking 18.
Obed Mc Coy, 1 for 9 from his two overs, was Grenadines Divers’ most economical bowler.
It was a final delayed by rain, but the ebb and flow continued when Divers began the chase for the winning runs, the title in their sights.
Salvan Browne, 40; and Asif Hooper, 24 at the top of the order, threatened to land Divers a good gift in their first visit to the final.
But player of the final, Darel Cyrus, who picked up 2 for 10; and Tijourn Pope, 3 for 25; put the brakes on Divers’ batting and they fell short of their target, stymied at 106 for 6 from their quota of 10 overs.
Fletcher was named the Player of the Tournament. He was the highest run scorer, amassing 371, inclusive of two centuries and a half century. To the good, he also had the best strike rate, 239; and hit the most sixes, 35.
Divers’ Obed Mc Coy copped the most wickets- 15, while Jacobus Pienaar of Dark View Explorers had the best batting average- 49.86, and the best economy rate as a bowler- 7.27 runs.
The ‘Emerging player’ was Jahiel Walters of La Soufriere Hikers who scored 253 runs.
The Fan favourite player award went to Obed Mc Coy; with Shatrughan Rambaran of Divers, adjudged to have taken the best catch; and Johann Jeremiah of Rangers taking the most catches.
For winning the title, Rangers collected $50,000 and runner-up, Divers, pocketed $20,000.
