ECGC hopes to raise EC$ 500,000 in support of Shafiqua Maloney
The East Caribbean Group of Companies, ECGC, its corporate friends and partners will host a major fundraiser next month dubbed “Shafiqua Maloney, The Inspiration” to raise funds for the Olympics Athlete as she prepares for the World Championships, a release from the East Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC) states.
The March, 8, 2025 event, which is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m at the Holiday Inn Express at Diamond Estate and hosted by the ECGC is aiming for a target of EC$500,000 to support Shafiqua Maloney’s 2028 Olympics journey, with two major global athletic events in which she will compete this year, 2025.
These are the World Athletics Indoor Championships set for March 21-23 in Nanjing, China; and the World Championships set for Tokyo, Japan from September 13-21.
ln 2024, Maloney became the first Vincentian to make the finals of an Olympic event; she however narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a nail biting fourth place finish in the 800 metres.
Contributions at the fundraiser are expected from the private and public sectors, including the country’s top 50 companies which will all be invited to the event, where they can announce their financial support to Maloney, the ECGC release outlines. Maloney is expected to fly into SVG where she will be the guest of honour at the event.
Maloney, meanwhile, continues to deliver excellence on the track and as recently as Saturday, February 8, 2025, established a brilliant time in the 800 meters , while setting a meet record of 1:59.07, at the Millrose Meet in New York.
ECGC through the Island Sipz Water brand, supports Shafiqua Maloney with over EC$100,000 annually, however, the company said the cost of preparing a world class athlete for the World Championships will be over EC$ 400,000, and the March 8,fundraiser will provide the opportunity for Corporate St. Vincent & the Grenadines and individuals to donate to the “Shafiqua Maloney – The Inspiration”, World Championship preparation fund.
