Shafiqua Maloney leads the Indoor 800m
St Vincent and the Grenadines’ first and lone Olympic finalist, Shafiqua Maloney, is showing intent that she wants to be up with the big names.
Maloney, who placed her name on the lips of many across the world last August, placing fourth in the Women’s 800m at the Paris Olympics, thus far for 2025 has run the fastest time.
Maloney claimed the world-leading time when she ran a meet record 1:59.07 to win the women’s 800m at the 117th staging of the Millrose Games at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York, last Saturday, February, 8,2025.
In that race, Maloney outran the American duo of Olivia Baker (2:00.02) and Kaela Edwards (2:00.14), who placed second and third, respectively.
Maloney is the St Vincent and the Grenadines all-time 800m record holder, a feat she achieved in 2024 in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics.
Like 2024, this year has started off well for Maloney, who last month clocked 1:24.60 in the 600m, to reset her previous record and that of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) in the indoor.
A rampant Maloney thus shaved almost three seconds from the old record of 1:27.45.
A two-time Olympian, Maloney the SVG all time 800m record holder, also has in her grasp the national 600m, 800m and mile indoor records, along with the outdoor 400 and 1500m best times.
Additionally, Maloney is part of the quartet who are custodians of the 4 x 400m record.
