Grassroot Tennis caravan spots talent in Fancy

The Grassroot Tennis Club’s coaching caravan rolled onto the Fancy hard court on Thursday, January 30, 2025 to conduct a session with students of the Fancy Government School.

The coaches left well satisfied, having spotted potential players who have the attributes to go further than just hitting the ball.

Attended by more than 30 children, the introductory session was filled with enthusiasm by the students, most of whom were touching a tennis racket for the first time.

From the basic drills to the conventional shots, the students enjoyed every moment.

According to Grant Connell who led the GTC team to the north windward constituency, talent abounds in Fancy.

“There are some students there who have a natural knack for the sport of Tennis. They have excellent hand-eye coordination, which are basic tenets”, Connell related.

He said that the school has a set of equipment for the students to continue learning the game.

At the helm of the GTC since its inception, Connell believes spreading tennis to every nook and cranny of St Vincent and the Grenadines, is the way to go.

“We started back in 2010 and was able to bring young players from Byera on the windward side, and from Petit Bordel on the leeward side. We at Grassroot have never stopped unearthing talent, as all areas in St Vincent and the Grenadines have tennis talent; it is for us to identify and nurture it.”

Connell revealed that the Grassroot Tennis Club plans to go into at least one community within all 15 constituencies and ignite the tennis talents that exist.
