Georgetown Secondary looking to do better at annual Schools’ Athletics Meet

The Georgetown Secondary School, which in recent years, has been placing among the top five in Inter-Secondary Schools’ athletics, is working towards improved outcomes in the 2025 athletics battle of secondary schools.

In the 2024 annual Inter-Secondary Schools’ athletics, Georgetown Secondary School won the boys division of the road relay, while the girls placed second in their division.

The school’s Physical Education Teacher, Steadroy Deane, told SEARCHLIGHT they have been making good progress.

“We have a programme going, and we’re working and we’re just hoping for the best. The athletes- very difficult at times to have them to come out and train, but once they’re out, then we put in the work, and we expect to see positive results.”

This is Deane’s third year as the physical education teacher at the school and he is of the firm belief that he has a very firm grip on the developmental programme that he wants to implement for the school.

“ We have been in the top five for both boys and girls for the last two years. We hope to maintain that … let’s just hope that the children come out to run because if they don’t run, we can’t place,” Deane said.

On Tuesday, January 21, 2025,the school held the preliminaries in the boys and girls junior, intermediate, and senior divisions in the long jump, shot putt, and discus throws at the Chili Playing Field, with the annual inter-house finals set for Friday, February 14, 2025, also at the Chili Playing Field.

Deane was pleased with much of the performances, but noted there is still much to do.

“We have to work hard on our field events in order for us to do well at Inter-Sec. That is one of our weaknesses … the field events. Therefore, as you notice, we are having different field events today… to see our best two athletes and then from there we can prepare them for inter-secondary school.”

Deane said he plans to secure the services of someone who is more advanced in coaching discus throwing to help with training in that area.

He is pleased with the level of support from the Georgetown community which he describes as encouraging, “You will hear encouraging words from persons from within the community, especially those who have children who are running … they give you some positive advice and we appreciate it.”
