Orange Team bosses Sweaterz Small Goal Christmas Day Football

The Orange team proved their prowess as the best combination of players assembled for the 2024 Sweaterz Small Goal Football competition, held at the Arnos Vale Two Playing Field on Christmas Day.

Comprising a bunch of active players sprinkled with a few oldsters and ‘sweaters’, Orange team beat Red in the final, one goal to nil, via a Denzel Bascombe strike.

It was Bascombe’s goal in the preliminaries that separated the Orange team from the White team.

Formatted on a knock out basis, Red beat Green on penalties after a goal- less draw, hence their place in the final.

A goal each from Strough, Stanley Liverpool, and Stephen King combined to see Green defeating White, 3-0 in the third place off.

Pouching the overall MVP award was Orange’s Juma Gilkes, with Bascombe claiming the title for the most goals scored, and the award for scoring the best goal, a feat he achieved in the final.

Adjudged the MVP among the Under- 20 players was Kareem Davis; while Dimitri Miller- Walker, walked off with the most improved player award; and Shawn Chandler, the most improved veteran player.

Shadel Cyrus was the lone female in the competition, and was justly rewarded. Similarly, Mbeki King as the youngest player, and Michael Ollivierre, the oldest player.

The teams’ MVPs were Juma Gilkes of Orange; James Grant of White; Jahseem James of Red and Shawn Chandler of Green.

There were also awards for White team which was the most disciplined unit; and for his untiring commitment to officiating, referee, Leevan Victory was given recognition by the organisers.

The 2024 edition saw organisers going over the top with some very attractive prizes presented to the recipients.

The Sweaterz Christmas Day Small Goal Competition started in 2020, beginning at the Wilf Slack Nets at the back of the Arnos Vale Netball Complex.
