Denella Creese plans for a career in Cricket
Vincentian female cricketer, Denella Creese, plans to make the best of her opportunity to represent the West Indies Under-19 team, once her services are needed.
Creese, who will don the #22 jersey, is part of the regional team to the 2025 International Cricket Council’s 20/20 World Cup, set to take place in Malaysia from January 18 to February 2, 2025.
A product of the North Leeward town of Chateaubelair, Creese exudes passion for her accomplishment.
“I feel extremely proud especially for my family, North Leeward and St Vincent and the Grenadines as a whole. I am the first young lady from the North Leeward area to reach to this level”, she expressed.
She is one of two wicketkeeper/ batters in the West Indies 15-member team for the global tournament, where the West Indies is grouped alongside India, Sri Lanka, and host Malaysia.
“I will give of my best once given that chance because I want to make a career out of cricket”, Creese told
SEARCHLIGHT on December 23, 2024 ahead of the team’s January 1, 2025 departure for Malaysia.
She noted that there are few female wicketkeepers, moreso at the Under-19 level, hence her push to get ahead of her competitors, but acknowledged that she has to play a great part in the process.
After representing the Windwards in the 2024 Cricket West Indies Rising Stars championships in Trinidad and Tobago, Creese was overlooked for a tour to England.
However, regional selectors had a rethink and later invited her to a training camp in Antigua and Barbuda.
By dint of hard work and dedication following the camp, Creese was among the 15 named for the historic Under-19 Women’s 20/20 tournament.
“Cricket is my mission; cricket is my sport, it has always been my first love,” declared Creese who considers herself a former national footballer.
“I stopped playing Football for the national team because of something that happened. I am not going to give up on Football. I will play it now and again, but it will be just for fun. Football, though, has helped me stay fit and has helped with my agility,” said Creese who played as a midfielder. The multi-talented athlete also plays Netball, Basketball and Volleyball.
The SVG Community College student is pursuing an Associate Degree in Sports Science.
The West Indies team engages in a pre-tournament camp from January 5-10, and has warm-up matches against Nepal on January 13, and New Zealand on January 15, 2025.
