Two local Basketball stalwarts recognized

Wayne Williams and Randolph Williams, who have made stalwart contributions to Basketball in St Vincent and the Grenadines over the years, have been recognized.
The two, who have served in different capacities, were thrown into the spotlight last Thursday night, November 14, 2024, at the New Montrose Basketball Facility.

Wayne Williams:
Wayne, who has been a tireless contributor to the development of Basketball in St Vincent and the Grenadines, is a certified Level Three FIBA coach, a certification he gained in 2003.
Credited for holding women’s Basketball together over the years, he served as SVG’s Head Coach for seven years- 1994 to 2001.
At an administrator, Williams was President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Basketball Federation from 2005 to 2007, then from 2016 to 2018.
At the level of the SVG Olympic Committee, Wayne served as a trustee from 1997 to 2009, and a vice- president from 2009 to 2021.
His recognition came from the organisers of the Open Court Invitational Basketball Competition.

Randolph “Sticky” Williams:
Unaware of his recognition, Williams got his moment of glory from the BlueChip Basketball Academy.
Having grown up playing Basketball at the Calliaqua Hard Court, ‘Sticky’ got his major break in the sport, when in 1997, he obtained a scholarship to attend the Bossier Parish Community College in Louisiana, USA.
After spending two years at that institution, Randolph moved on to the Washburn University in Kansas, USA.
He was part of the institution’s history- making team that was the first to reach the National Collegiate Athletics Association Championship, as well as winning both the Mid- America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) regular season, and the MIAA Tournament Championships.
A regular member of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Senior Team, Randolph Williams was the Vice Captain in 1999 when the country won its first Windward Islands Tournament.
Then in 2010, the last time the four Windward Islands came together at the senior level in Basketball, Williams was at the helm when St Vincent and the Grenadines lifted the title.
