Vincentians take three overseas Masters Squash titles

Two Vincentians, James Bentick and Othniel Bailey competing at different sides of the globe, between them, secured three Masters Squash titles.

In Malaysia, Bentick remained as champion of the Penang Masters that took place at the Nicol David Squash Centre from November 8- 10, 2024.

In dominant fashion, Bentick swished his three opponents- Kong Kai Yurn, Low Chin Hong, and Tan Tien Huat, by 3-0 margins.

Bentick then took the 55 and Over title of the ACE Malaysian Masters Open 2024, played at the Lake View Club, from November 13 to 17.

He saw off Balakrishnan Rangasamy 11/4, 11/3, 11/7, before defeating Alvin Chong, 11/3, 11/3, 11/7.

Bentick then beat Simon Ward 11/8, 9/11, 11/1, 11/0 and in the final, had an 11/2, 11/4. 11/7 win over Chhabi Lal Paija Pun.

It was Bentick’s fourth title in Malaysian Squash circles having won the 50 and Over titles in 2019 and 2022.

A pleased Bentick said he relished playing on the glass court.

“Playing on the glass court in the final of the Malaysian Open was a special touch. Playing on the same court as the PSA (Professional Squash Association) players was itself a great feeling. The location and environment are second to none. I have played on many courts around the world, but this one is very special,” he recounted.

Meanwhile, Bailey contested the Saint Lucia Yacht Club’s Diamond Anniversary on the weekend of November 16 and 17, 2024.

Showing his prowess, Bailey topped the lot beating Felix Degrasse and Randolph Khan, 3-0 in his first round and quarter final matches respectively.

Bailey then registered a 3-1 win over Ben Gilmore in the semi-finals and crowned it off with a 3-0 (11/5, 11/5, 11/4) win over Carlos Segovia in the final.

Bailey will be in action this weekend, when he participates in the 32nd Annual British Virgin Islands Meridan Masters Tournament at the Tortola Sports Club.

He is listed in the Men’s 35 to 44 age group.
