Local cyclists ride second fiddle on home soil
Vincentian cyclists had to settle for the second and third places when the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cycling Union (SVGCU) hosted a 66.6 mile Invitational Road race last Sunday, September 22, 2024.
The host country’s podium finishes were the Premium Products sponsored Lucky Antrobus, and teenager, Gabriel Doyle.
Topping the race was Grenadian, Karega Charles, who crossed the end line at Casson Hill in 3:28:54.59.
Trailing him was Antrobus in 3:29:01.54 and Doyle, with a time of 3:29:02.19.
Another Grenadian, Tessimy Viechey placed fourth, stopping the clock at 3:30:02.19. Home boy, Sherwin James followed in a time of 3:33:02.19, and Denver Alphonse of Saint Lucia was the other finisher. The Saint Lucian completed the course in 3:38:15.20.
Two other local cyclists- Zefal Bailey and Rivas Young, did not finish the race. The race began at the decommissioned ET Joshua Airport Tarmac, and headed in a north easterly direction to Tourama. From there, the cyclists journeyed to Mount Young and back to Tourama, doing that loop twice, and used the Windward Highway to get to the finish line at Casson Hill.
Despite not completing last Sunday’s event, Bailey heads out to Barbados for the Tour De Bim, then to the Tobago Classic. Like other Vincentian cyclists Bailey is also gearing up for the Senior Caribbean Cycling Championships set for Guyana in November.
