Young sailors/coaches build their knowledge and skills

SIX YOUNG St Vincent and the Grenadines sailors, along with three from Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and Grenada, were part of a Technical Level Two Course for Coaches, which was held from August 22 to 28, at Coconut Grove, Canash Bay.

The certification course had as facilitators, two World Sailing Coach Developers, Tania Ellis Callis of Mexico, and Tim Cross of the United Kingdom.

Involving theoretical and practical sessions, both facilitators are happy that the sailors/coaches have made significant strides from the one week of engagement.

“We noticed throughout the week, their sailing competencies and their racing competencies have increased,” Callis said.

Meanwhile, Cross assessed that the youngsters have gained a lot more skills during the period which they have demonstrated during the period. “We are hopeful that the sailors will instruct others about their new found knowledge and apply that knowledge to their sailing itself,” he shared.

The sailors/coaches were taught how to apply skills in racing, as well as different aspects of the starting/learning processes

and safety signals, among others.

On Saturday, August 31, they were able to apply some of the organizational skills as they were responsible for coaching and staging a Regatta in the same Canash Bay area.

The six local sailors/ coaches who attained their level two certification are Akira Brown, Joseph Hadley, Scarlett Hadley, Isaiah Blackett, Tegan Deane and Zach Mac Lawrence.
