Volleyball gets a boost at Olympic Day celebrations
The sport of Volleyball got a good boost, when the St Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee( SVGOC), concluded its commemoration of Olympic Week 2024, on June 23, at the Layou Hard court.
Through some exhibition matches, involving seasoned volley-ballers and novices to the sport, the court was lit with excitement, as many were playing the sport for the first time.
“ Volleyball sweet eh,” remarked one national net baller, as she tried her hand on the court.
Matthias said that he was also hopeful that the exhibition matches would have ignited the Layou community in getting volleyball back in the area.
He underscored that Layou was once a vibrant volleyball catchment, that produced the potent Layou Tornadoes.
Apart from the volleyball exhibition matches, the week’s culmination also included a swim from the Layou jetty to the Layou beach by members of the SVG Swimmers Federation, as well as the Olympic Day Run/ Walk, through parts of Layou.
Prior to the walk, brief addresses were given by general secretary of the SVGOC, Keith Joseph, and Claude Bascombe Jr, assistant secretary/treasurer of the SVGOC, who co-ordinated the week’s activities. Also included in the activities were a church service, and a Domino competition among affiliates of the SVGOC.
