World XI bosses Football in Sharpes

When the curtains came down on the 2024 Sharpes Nine -A- Side Football Competition last Sunday June 9, 2024, World XI carted off the winner’s trophy, a cheque for $2,500, and medals to the good.

The earnings were their reward for a commanding 3-0 win over Largo Height, champions in 2023, who were seeking to repeat their winning ways.

However, D’ Andre Smith opened World XI’s account, then Enrique Millington added a double to install their team as the new champions.

World XI, a concoction that features several players from the Sion Hill community, had advanced to the final following a win on penalties over Central in the semi-finals.

Largo Height secured their second straight final berth, edging out Police 1-nil.

Police went on to take the third place, beating Central 3-2 in the play-off.

The dethroned champions, Largo Height earned themselves $1,500, a trophy, and medals; while Police got a trophy and $1,000.

Following Sunday’s final, a brief ceremony took place, and Largo Height’s Cordel Theobalds was again named Player of the Competition, and 11 year old Shaquille Dublin of Plan, the Youngest Player in the tournament.

Anthony Hazel, World XI’s custodian, was adjudged Best Goal Keeper; Young Legends’ Geron Haynes,  Best Defender; Central’s Valdo Anderson claimed the Most Goals award; and Camdonia Chelsea, retained the Most Disciplined Team award.

The closing ceremony was addressed by Parliamentary Representative for Central Kingstown, St Clair Leacock, and Dominic Sutherland, a benefactor of the competition.
