Sports Sciences and High Performance take gold in Community College road relay

Sport Sciences females and High Performance males ran their way to the top spots in the 2024 St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College’s road relay on Wednesday March 13, 2024.

The females from the Applied Associates Degree in Sports Sciences had to overcome an unpleasant start, working their way from fourth position deep into the second leg but took charge of the female race four hundred meters before the second change over and never looked back.

Shafaa Layne’s masterful run on the second leg set it all up, and was complemented by the efforts of Dexian Williams, Nikayla Griffith, Shonte Matthias, Elizabeth Solomon and Alancia Joseph, to give Sports Sciences their win in 1 hour 18 minutes 47.63 seconds.

An extraordinary effort by the Division of Nursing Education saw them taking the second place in 1 hour 29 minutes 50.16 seconds; while the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies were third in 1 hour 30 minutes 44.34 seconds.

In the male category, a keen battle took place all the way, but was ultimately decided 10 metres before the penultimate change over. The High Performance team trailed the Division of Technical and Vocational Education until that point. That is when the tall, lanky runner of High Performance powered his way past his opposing number and at the final change-over, High Performance was left unchallenged to cross the finish line in 49 minutes 57.25 seconds.

The Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies, the 2023 champions, finished second in 52 minutes 02.78 seconds, while the third place went to the Division of Technical and Vocational Education. They ran impressively, leading the male race until that spurt by the High Performance runner who took the lead just before the penultimate change over to cross the finish line in third place in 52 minutes 41.41 seconds.
