Canouan youths exposed to formal Swimming lessons
An initiative by Assistant Sports Officer for the Southern Grenadines – Rickydene Alexander has resulted in 25 students from the Canouan Government School being formally introduced to the sport of Swimming.
The five-day programme, during which students were taught different strokes and survival skills, took place at Grand Bay on Canouan from August 7 to 11.
Elated that the sessions were well received, Alexander is already charting the course for follow up activities.
“Based on the interest shown by both the students and by the school’s principal – Mrs Ketty Kydd- Rhynd, I see potential for further training for the students and to have Swimming part of their Physical Education programme,” Alexander informed.
He related that even though the students of the school are “good swimmers”, teaching them properly was imperative.
Alexander said that the Canouan Government School project is part of his mandate to have Swimming make an impact on the schools in the Southern Grenadines.
Already rooted are programmes at the Union Island Secondary, the Mary Hutchinson Primary and the Stephanie Browne Primary Schools, all on Union Island.
