SVG snaps five golds at Open Karate Championships

Hosts, St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) came away with five gold medals at the SVG Open Karate Championships held at the West St George Secondary School on Saturday, April 8, and Sunday, April 9.

Accounting for the gold medals were Amiyah Bascombe, Mowriyah Dallaway, Cassique Quow, Christian Joseph and Shannon Joyette.

Bascombe of SVG’s Seishin Karate Dojo, won the Female Under-14 Kata event, while Mowriyah Dallaway, representing the IKD Shotokan Club, won gold in the Kumite of the Female Under-14 age group.

Quow, also of IKD Shotokan Club took the Female Cadet Kata title, with Joseph of the Seishin Karate dojo, winning the Male Cadet Kata.

Meanwhile, Joyette claimed the Male Cadet Kumite title. Joyette represented the Dragon RYU Karate Club.

The other titles all went to the visiting karatekas.

Landon Batson of the High Performance Karate Club of Trinidad and Tobago won the Male Under-14 Kata, with Aidan Batson also of High Performance securing the Kumite.

Jaydee Williams of the Grenada Karate Federation fetched the Junior Female Kata title, while Michelle Lue- Fatt of the High Performance Karate Centre of Trinidad and Tobago, did the double in the Senior Female, copping both the Kata and Kumite titles.

Trumping the Male Senior Kata title was Avinash Ramgloban of the Association Shotokan Karate of Guyana.

There was a double take for the Titans Karate Training Academy of Barbados, as Sheridan Greaves took the Male Senior 84 + Kg category’s Kumite, and club mate Kodie King, won the Male Senior Under 75Kg segment.

The championships featured 34 karatekas, representing six countries and territories: Anguilla, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
