Roban leaves his mark on NCAA Championships
Handal Roban has left a mark in his first season running indoors.
Competing for Penn State University in the Men’s 800m at the National Collegiate Athletic Association( NCAA) Division One Indoor Championships last Saturday, March 11, Vincentian, Roban finished third.
At the meet held in Albuquerque New Mexico, USA, Roban clocked 1:47.28 in the finals, earning him the bronze.
But it was more than finishing third, as Roban gulped the status of being the top freshman in the event on the NCAA circuit.
Moreover, he gave Penn State University its first medal since 2018.
Roban was fifth in the heats, but his 1:48.15 clocking was good enough to afford him an automatic qualifying place in the final.
Apart from his bronze medal, in his debut season competing indoors, Roban set two new St Vincent and the Grenadines titles.
First, he established the national record in the 1000m at the Nittany Lion Challenge on January 14, with a 2:24.08 clocking.
Then on February 4, at the Skyes & Sabock Invitational his 1:47.01, erased the long standing 1:48.58 in the 800m, done by Eversley Linley, back in 1992.
