SVG prepares to host first male netball tourney in the Americas

St Vincent and the Grenadines is set to host the first ever Men’s Netball Tournament in the Americas from August 31-September 5.

And captain of the local team, Akeal Matthews is confident that Vinci Warriors will do well against the four other participating countries.

Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Jamaica and hosts St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be joined by guest participant, South Africa in this unique male contest.

Mathews, a centre court player and occasional goal shooter told SEARCHLIGHT that despite not having had the opportunity to play any friendly matches against foreign teams as part of their preparation, “I think my team’s chances are pretty good… once we implement the drills that we have been learning from our coach.”

Comparing the local standards to that of South Africa and Jamaica, Mathews nevertheless remains upbeat, stating, “I think that we can take on any country. You bring the country and we can make it happen.”

Since preparations began for the male netball tournament, Mathews said he is satisfied that despite a few hiccups, “preparations have been going quite well.”

The tournament is scheduled to be played at the Arnos Vale courts and Mathews is extending an invitation to the sports loving public to come out in support.

“ We have been working very hard and we cannot wait to show you guys all the skills and all the hard work that we have put in.”
