Roban pouches bronze medal at Caribbean Games
MIDDLE DISTANCE athlete, Handal Roban was the lone podium finisher for St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), at the first ever Caribbean Games which ended in Guadeloupe last Sunday, July 3.
Roban clocked 3:58.37 in the men’s 1500m, to take the bronze medal in that event on July 1.
The next best effort for the Vincentians on the day , was Javon Rawlins’ fourth place in the men’s 100m. His time was 10.74s.
Sage Primus docked in sixth, also in the men’s 100m in a time of 10.83s.
The other Vincentian track and field athlete was Desroy Jordan who ended in ninth place in the men’s 400m. Jordan’s time was 47.87s.
St Vincent and the Grenadines also contested the disciplines of Swimming and Netball.
In Swimming, Kennice Greene was fifth in the women’s 200m Individual Medley and placed 14th in the women’s 50m Freestyle.
Meanwhile, Eltonte Leonard placed 20th in the men’s 50m Freestyle, and Kevern Da Silva was 21st in the women’s 50m Freestyle.
And, the Vincentian netballers won only one of the five matches they contested.
St Vincent and the Grenadines was beaten by Barbados 59-10, and suffered a 65-18 defeat at the hands of Jamaica.
They also lost to Trinidad and Tobago, 51-15 and St Lucia, 43-24.
The Vincentian lasses lone time to smile on the netball court was their 70-3 win over host, Guadeloupe.
The inaugural Caribbean Games which opened June 29, also included Judo, 3 x 3 Basketball, Futsal,and Cycling.
The Caribbean Games catered for participants under the age of 23.
Plans are afoot to have the second edition in 2026.
