Avenues celebrate another national football title
Avenues added the inaugural second division title of the SVGFF national club championships, to its collection last Sunday at the Chili Playing Field in Georgetown.
Coming face to face with their nemesis System 3, Avenues came out better 2-1, in a bruising finale.
Avenues’ talisman and captain Raheem Westfield, again got his name on the score sheet in the 15th minute.
Thereafter, both teams traded ascendancy, but neither was able to change the score-line in the first half.
On resumption, against the run of play, Avenues added a second, with a well taken left foot shot from Delano John, in the 56th minute.
Avenues’ lead was cut in half within two minutes when Shayne Lynch was found unmarked at the other end of a right side cross, as System 3 pulled back one, making it 2-1.
Lynch, though, let his team down moments after, as he failed to convert a penalty.
System 3, throwing everything at Avenues, camped out for the better part of the last 20 minutes of the second period, in their opponents’ territory.
However, the System 3 strikers did not make use of the many forays, and Avenues had a joyous celebration at the final sound of referee, Moeth Gaymes’ whistle.
Pride and Joy took the third place, as they got past SV United 3-2 in kicks from the penalty spot, after both were locked 3-3 at the end of regulation time.
Scorers for Pride and Joy were Bradley John (6th minute), Joneil Swift (12th minute) and Ameen John (19th minute).
SV United goals came from Curtly Peters (22nd and 53rd minutes) and Alex Adams (9th minute).
The top four teams placing first to fourth, will be rewarded $4,000, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
