Choppins Love take New Year’s Day Calliaqua SGF title
Choppins Love took the annual Calliaqua area small goal football competition, held last Sunday, New Year’s Day, at the Calliaqua Culture Pot Square.
Choppins Love won one–nil in a penalty shootout over first timers, the youthful Strike Force, in the final.
Both teams were level at one goal apiece, at the sound of the final whistle. Choppins Love had gone ahead through Kendall Joseph, but Osei Thompson restored parity with a second half reply for Strike Force.
Choppins Love got $250 and other prizes for taking the competition, while Strike Force received $150 and third placed Shanti Lions – $120.
Before reaching the final, Choppins Love had beaten Shanti Lions also one–nil in penalty kicks, after both had played to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
On the other hand, Strike Force got past Choppins No Nonsense two-nil on penalty kicks, after they had played to a goalless draw in normal time.
Shanti Lions ousted Choppins No Nonsense one-nil, also on penalties, as they squared off for the third place prize.
Again, it was a stalemate in regulation time.
Eight teams participated in the competition. The other participating teams were Star Blocks, Young Street, which were in Group One, along with Strike Force and Shanti Lions.
Stashed in Group Two of the preliminaries were Choppins No Nonsense and Choppins Love, along with Howard’s Marine and last year’s winners – Young Bush.
