Leewards stay perfect in WICB U-19 Cricket Tournament
The Leeward Islands remained perfect with two wins after round two of the West Indies Cricket Board Under-19 three-day tournament ended last Tuesday here in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
Normally the whipping boys of the tournament, the Leewards added to their first triumph over the Windwards a spanking of defending champions, Guyana, within two days at the Arnos Vale One Playing Field.{{more}}
Guyana was skittled out for 42 on Sunday, the first day of the encounter, undone by the bowling of Kian Pemberton 4/28 and Javy Benjamin 3/9.
The Leewards replied with 153. Cameron Pennyfeather made 48. Bowling for Guyana, Kheshram Seyhodan took 6/32.
Batting a second time, Guyana scored 162. Sherfane Rutherford made 41, Bhaskar Yadram â 37, Malcolm Hubbard â 35, while Javy Benjamin got 2 for 25 and Daniel Doram 2 for 27.
The Leewards, set 52 to win, romped to 57/4. Kofi James was 22 not out.
In other second round matches, Barbados completed an outright win over Jamaica, while the Trinidad and Tobago and Windwards match petered out as an incomplete result.
At the Sion Hill Playing Field, Barbados won by 113 runs.
Set 178 to win, Jamaica were sent packing for 64, undone by the bowling of Desron Currency, who bagged 6/13 and Joshua Bishop, 3/24.
Barbados had batted first and scored 149; Nicholas Kirton racked up 42 and Joshua Bishop, 30.
Bowling for Jamaica, Michael Frew took 4/62 and Brad Barnes 3/18.
In response, Jamaica made 125, with Jordane Hill, 38 and Brad Barnes 29, being the main contributors.
Joshua Bishop took 6/53 for Barbados, who scored 153 batting a second time. Nicholas Kirton was again the lead scorer with 59, while Jeavor Royale had 3/30 and Javelle Glenn â 2/23.
At Park Hill, the Windwards opted for batting practice, after trailing Trinidad and Tobago by 8 runs.
Batting a second time, the Windwards, on the strength of Anil Matthewsâ 108, Ryan Johnâs 57, Johnel Eugeneâs 53 and Othniel Lewisâ 25, reached 298/8 when play was called off.
Earlier in the day, Trinidad and Tobago declared at 212 for 9. Keagan Simmons made 55 and Dejourn Charles, 40.
Rasheed Fredricks took 3/48 and Othniel Lewis â 2/39.
The Windwards had scored 204 all out in their first effort. Othniel Lewis â 82 and Emmanuel Stewart â 36, made the significant batting contributions.
Jonathan Bootan took 4/31 and Kirstan Kallicharan 3/31.
First Round Results
The Leewards had registered a six-wicket win over the Windwards in the opening punches at the Sion Hill venue.
In a low scoring affair, the Windwards managed 109, with Alick Athanaze â 29. Kofi James took 3 /20, Daniel Doram â 3/21 and Kiam Pemberton â 3/23.
Leewards, in response, reached 104; Ross Powell got 33; Rasheed Fredericks took 4/35 and Othniel Lewis â 3/23, bowling for the Windwards.
Emmanuel Stewart â 58 and Alick Athanaze â 47, were the main stay of the Windwardsâ second innings of 156, as Kiam Pemberton picked off 4/13 and Javy Benjamin- 2/16.
The Leewards then rushed to 171/4, led by Ross Powellâs 85 not out and Tyrone Williamsâ 48. Rasheed Fredericks had 3/50 in a losing cause for the Windwards.
At Park Hill, Jamaica handed Guyana a 39-run defeat.
Jamaica scored 143 and Javor Royale â 53, while bowling for Guyana, Akinie Adams grabbed 7/38 and Bakha Badram â 2/57.
Guyana replied with 121; Ronaldo Renee made 55. Javor Royale bagged 6/29 and Michael Frew â 4/39.
Batting a second time, Jamaica were dismissed for 129. Again it was Royale who was the mainstay, making 44.
Guyanaâs bowling attack was led by Travis Persaud â 2/3, Sherfene Ballantyne â 2/15 and Akenie Adams â 2/55.
Guyana was sent packing for 112. Keeno Paul top scored with 33 and Joshua Persaud contributed 28.
For Jamaica, Javelle Glynn snared 5/27 and Royale had 4/23, to finish with match figures of 10/52.
And, at Arnos Vale One, Trinidad and Tobago amassed 371, with Kristan Kallicharan hitting 110, Bryan Boodram â 88, Cephas Cooper â 59 and Dejourn Charles â 51.
Barbadosâ bowling saw Reniko Boucher taking 5/66, Dominic Drakes â 2/79 and Chemar Holder â 2/85.
Shain Braithwaite then led Barbadosâ response with 72, in his teamâs total of 194. Jonathan Bootam picked off 5/51 and Bryan Boodram â 3/43.
In Barbadosâ second visit to the crease, Leniko Boucher stroked 119 and Yvan Grant â 39, to see their team to safety at 225 for 5. Jalarnie Seales got 2/32, as the match was deemed incomplete.
The final round of matches was set to begin yesterday, with the Leewards facing Jamaica at Stubbs; the Windwards and Barbados at Arnos Vale One and at Sion Hill, Guyana against Trinidad and Tobago.(RT)
