New champion in line for Clinchers softball competition

A new champion will be crowned when the final of the 2016 St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Co-operative Credit Union Clinchers T/20 Softball Cricket Competition concludes June 26 at the Richland Park Oval.

This, after Owia Young Strikers sent defending champions Gairy Construction Simple Boyz packing with a comprehensive 70-run win on Saturday.{{more}}

Batting first after winning the toss, Owia Young Strikers reached 149 for 6 off their 20 overs with Denson Hoyte getting 40, made up of 2 fours and 5 sixes, while Daverson Lavia’s 35 saw him hitting 4 sixes and a solitary four. Osnet Cato struck 30, made up of 4 sixes and a four, leading the batting.

Keneil Skinner took 2 for 24 and Stein Joseph 2 for 28, bowling for Simple Boyz.

Setting a challenging 150 for victory, Simple Boyz, who also won the title in 2013, were dismissed for 79 in 18.2 overs and made their exit from the tournament.

In the other quarter-final encounter, Sion Hill Tallawahs easily disposed of former champions, CGM Gallagher Novice with a seven-wicket win and claimed a berth in the semi-finals.

Novice, winners of the competition in 2014, batted first and struggled to 84 in 18.4 overs to which Sion Hill Tallawahs replied with 85 for 3 in 14 overs. Shamic Roberts stroked 29 not out.

The semi-finals, which were set for last Sunday had to be rescheduled because of rain.

They will take place on Saturday June 25 and pit Nice Radio Clinchers against on Sion Hill Tallawahs from 12.30 pm, while 2012 winners – Country Meet Town Out Ah Trouble will meet Owia Young Strikers from 3 pm.

The third place play-off will precede the final with the presentation ceremony taking place after the final.(RT)
