Through the CANOC Olympic Academy, the project is to develop and refine the national sport programming, physical literacy, competitive readiness and sustainable sport systems for 2020 and beyond.

With five sporting disciplines selected: athletics, beach volleyball, cycling, swimming and table tennis, the Sports For Life programme projects to develop a total of 25 sport/country specific Long-Term Athlete Development models.

Personnel from Sports For Life will visit St Vincent and the Grenadines five times for two days per visit, at an interval of four months, for in-person meetings with each national association’s work group to develop a national sport specific athlete development pathway.

In addition, Sports For Life will be provided appropriate homework, as well as remote coaching and development to occur with a Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) expert in between visits.

In setting the pathway for its implementation, a two-day symposium set for Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) takes place at the Frenches House, Monday, February 22 and Tuesday, February 23.

Among the topics to be looked at are the LTAD Background and Introduction; Big challenges and Opportunities; LTAD Athlete Development Pathway; Physical Literacy; as well as Advancing Health and Education based on Physical Literacy.

The main resource person will be Richard Way, who is a member of the Sport For Life delivery team.

According to a release from the local NOC, “This project will be of significant interest to all persons interested in the development of our youths, especially teachers in Pre-Schools and Primary Schools.”

St Vincent and the Grenadines is among other territories in the region involved in the programme.(RT)
