Premier division cricket teams set at six by 2017

Six cricket outfits, two fewer than what obtained over many years, will contest the 2016 Premier Division of the national cricket programme, under the aegis of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association.{{more}}

This was one of the resolutions taken, when the association staged its general meeting recently at the President’s Suite at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.

The new format will see the seven teams facing each other in the usual league format.

It was also resolved that the team finishing at the bottom of the standings in this year’s competition will be demoted to the first division, but there will be no promotion.

This is to bring the required number in the premiership to six.

And, come 2017, the six teams in the Premier Division will play each twice, with the promotion and relegation in place.

The seven teams seeking to remain in the Premier Division this year are Team Rivals, LIME Radcliffe, Guardian General Saints, Carl Joseph Law Chambers ASCO, Police Two, Victors One and the News Spartans.

At the completion of the 2015 edition, Triumph United was relegated to the First Division after placing last; however, Ruddy’s Electrical Unique Warriors, which won the First Division, opted not to take the plunge into the Premier Division.

The other resolution taken at the general meeting is of a financial nature, as funds lodged at one institution will be transferred to another.

Last Saturday’s meeting also examined the audited financial statement of the association, which covered the period October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015.

In addition, there was the executive’s report, as well as the minutes of the last general meeting.

Prior to last Saturday’s general meeting, president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association Kishore Shallow had stated that his organization will be guided by the current strategic plan to position cricket as the sport of choice in the country.

Shallow noted that his association’s plans are aimed at revolutionizing the sport locally.(RT)
