National Football Club Championships premiership kicks off this Sunday

The premiership of the National Football Club Championships, put on by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation, kicks off this Sunday at the Victoria Park.

The event, which is in fact the 2015 edition, had been stalled for a number of reasons.{{more}}

General secretary of the SVGFF Raymond Trimmingham told SEARCHLIGHT, “The premier division was affected by the preparations of the senior men’s for World Cup qualifiers; then there was the federation’s election as well as national elections.”

Trimmingham noted that whilst they were able to commence the first and Under-17 divisions of the National Club Championships, the premiership would have been uncertain, as some of the playing fields were venues for political rallies.

Thirteen clubs will be looking to unseat the 2014 winners – Guardian General Hope International.

They are Campdonia-Chelsea, System Three, Avenues, Sion Hill, Prospect United, Parkside Rollers, Toni Stores Jugglers, Pastures, Je Belle, SV United, Dove FC, Bequia United and Greiggs.

Sunday’s opening fixtures see Greiggs taking on SV United from 4:30 p.m., to be followed by Sion Hill versus defending champions Hope International.

This time around, the championship’s format has been revisited, with each of the 14 clubs meeting each other.

The top club in the premiership wins the cash prize of $10,000, second place – $6,000, while the third place pockets $3,000 and fourth place – $1,000.

The holding over of the national club championships means that the National Inter Community League, which normally consumes the first quarter of the national football calendar, has been shelved in the meantime.(RT)
