Improved Calliaqua New Year’s Day Small Goal Football Competition coming
Buoyed by the successes of last Friday’s Calliaqua New Year’s Day Small Goal Football Competition held at the Culture Pot Square in Calliaqua, organizers have promised a “bigger and better” effort in 2017.
That was the solemn promise of Osborne Bowens, a member of the organizing committee, who spoke at the presentation ceremony. Bowens said that was an undertaking of the committee, which seeks to build on each year’s undertaking.
Joining Bowens in that projection is newly elected area representative Camillo Gonsalves.
As platinum sponsor for this year’s competition, Gonsalves said that following on the heels of the New Year’s edition, there is more in store for the constituency.
“This was a wonderful New Year’s event and I was glad to be a part of it…. We look forward to do it bigger and better in 2017,” Gonsalves commented.
As a build-up to the next outing, Gonsalves projected, “We are going to be playing a lot of football on a lot of the hard courts in East St George…. We are going to be in Calliaqua, We going to be in Glen, Belmont, all over, so that we can build a stronger community spirit.”
The annual New Year’s competition hit a high point last Friday, as eight teams contested, moving up from five in 2014 and 2015.
This year also saw fun activities for children in the form of a Bouncing Castle, which was free of cost to the parents.
Taking the individual spotlights though, on the square, were Myron Quinton and Kizani Stewart.
Quinton, who represented three in a row champions Young Bush, copped the award for the most goals, as he netted on four occasions, while Stewart of fourth placed Combined Youths was adjudged the most valuable player.(RT)
