Georgetown Secondary take maiden schools’ football title

The Georgetown Secondary School triumphed over all in the senior division of the Ministry of Education’s Secondary Schools’ Football Competition, which closed off last Friday at the Victoria Park.

Undaunted by the fact that most of the players of the Georgetown outfit were playing at the venue for the first time, they brought the match to the more seasoned Dr JP Eustace outfit.

The defending champions, Dr JP Eustace Memorial, got on the score sheet in the 10th minute through Javid Pompey.

Dr JP Eustace kept the persistent Georgetown Secondary at bay until half time.

Soon after the resumption, Brendon Johnson brought parity to the proceedings with a goal in the 44th minute.

The eventual winner came in the 63rd minute, when Metchron Lewis took advantage of a mistake from Dr JP Eustace Memorial’s custodian Jahwan Peters, to put the ball over the line following a left side corner.

Thereafter, the Dr JP Eustace Memorial defence had to ward off an imperious Terris Joseph, whose piercing runs and dribbling provided the sparse attendance something to cheer about.

It was not much of a choice for national coach Cornelius Huggins to adjudicate that Joseph was the deserved Player of the Final.

Taking the title for the first time was a joy to the entire student body, as expressed by team captain Terris Joseph.

Joining Joseph in heaping praise on the team’s efforts was coach Troy Browne, who volunteered his services to the school.

“We trained for three months for this competition and to reach this far is a good feeling,” Browne told SEARCHLIGHT.

“I am glad that I was able to give of my time without money and I have no connection per se to the school, but the players know me and I know them,” Browne said.

He believed part of the team’s success was the synergy among the players, as most are part of a new outfit in the North East Football League, named Chapmans United.

Georgetown Secondary had overcome the Central Leeward Secondary 3-2 in the semi-finals, while Dr JP Eustace Memorial registered a 4-nil beating on the Intermediate High School.

Central Leeward took the third place, following a 4-2 ousting of the Intermediate High.(RT)
