SVGCA skimps on annual awards ceremony
The St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association (SVGCA) has cut back on the number of awards presented during its annual awards and presentation ceremony, which highlights the top performers during the period under review.{{more}}
When the association staged its 2015 edition last Friday night at the Murray Heights Hotel, some of the usual presentations were obviously absent.
Among those which got deleted from the awards list by the SVGCA were the Dr Ken Antrobus and the Zepton Greaves awards.
The two have been staples in the diet of previous presentations, with the former given to someone who contributes to the sport without actively playing cricket, while the latter rewarded the top all-rounder in the competition.
Also facing a chink were the Developmental Female Cricketer of the Year and the Best All-rounder in the womenâs competition.
But most notable was the cash awards to the most smartly dressed male and female cricketers.
According to a release from the SVGCA sent to the media: âAdditionally, for the first time, there will be two cash awards for the most smartly dressed male and female cricketers, which is sponsored by the SVG Young Professionals Association.â
The release further stated that president of the SVGCA Kishore Shallow noted that the latter award, âis in line with the SVGCAâs efforts and encouragement for cricketers to be more professional.â
However, no announcement was made at last Fridayâs ceremony as to who were the two recipients. The SVGCA, which also in 2014 inscribed the names of the awardees on their trophies, this year simply had the name of the award.
As promised, the SVGCA though, instead of the Five Cricketers of the Year, awarded the top three Female Cricketers of the Year and the top three Male Cricketers of the Year and the Youth Cricketer of the Year.
But missing were proper citations of the awardees, with none announced in some instances.
The theme for last Fridayâs award ceremony was âProfessionalism â A key ingredient for success in sportsâ.
