Primary Schools’ Rugby Festival hits it off

Four schools: the Chateaubelair Methodist, the Georgetown Primary, the Barrouallie Government and the CW Prescod Primary were all part of the annual instalment of the inter-primary schools’ fun day.{{more}}

The budding players assembled at the Grammar School Playing Field last Wednesday to show off what they have learnt as part of the Get into Rugby Programme.

Under the watchful eyes of visiting coach Mike Jackson, the students from the four schools were engaged in tag-rugby, which has been the focus of their weekly exercises since September.

A satisfied Jackson told SEARCHLIGHT that much of what was taught came out on the day.

“It was a learning experience for them and all in all it was a success…. The weather held enough for us to have the event,” Jackson said.

He indicated that he was able to fit in a bit of competition among the four schools.

In the end, the Barrouallie Government was declared the boys’ winners and the CW Prescod Primary copped the girls’ component.

The St Mary’s RC is the other primary school in the Get Into Rugby Programme. However, for a combination of reasons, they did not participate in last Wednesday’s fun day.

The non-contact tag-rugby is aimed as an introductory methodology to teach the basic skills and techniques needed to play competitively.(RT)
