SVG dock second…Dominica retain Windwards cricket title
Host St Vincent and the Grenadines had to settle for second place, as Dominica retained the Winlott Inc Windward Islands two-day senior cricket tournament.
The two met in the last round of matches, which ended last Wednesday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.{{more}}
Dominica, who had previously registered outright wins over St Lucia and Grenada, earned first innings honours over St Vincent and the Grenadines and another hold on the annual exercise.
After being inserted, Dominicaâs innings closed at 232 all out, with Liam Sebastian making 86 and Tyrone Theophile, 39.
St Vincent and the Grenadinesâ most successful bowler was Keron Cottoy, who took 4 for 44; Kenneth Dembar had 2 for 44.
In reply, Sunil Ambris hit 48 and Alton Bobb, 31, as St Vincent and the Grenadines laboured for 68.5 overs and in between the showers, for 205 all out. Shane Shillingford grabbed 3 for 64, Kevin James had 2 for 51.
Dominica finished on 44 points and St Vincent and the Grenadines, 36.
Grenada, who were joint winners with Dominica last year, ended on 19 points and St Lucia â 17.
Their battle for the third and fourth places was also affected by rain at the Sion Hill Playing Field.
Grenada were dismissed for 98; Roland Cato made 37. Dornan Edwards bagged 5 for 14 and Dalton Polius, 2 for 22.
St Lucia scored 198 for 9 declared and Grenada, batting a second time, were 108 for 4 when play ended.
In Dominicaâs triumph over Grenada, Dominica made 152 at the Arnos Vale One venue, with Kershaki Jno Lewis getting 41.
Bowling for Grenada, Deron Hypolite had 3 for 25, Craig Phillips â 3 for 28 and Josh Thomas â 2 for 27.
Dominican bowlers Liam Sebastian â 6 for 32 and Shane Shillingford â 2 for 34 pooled, to see Grenada to 116 for 9 declared.
Batting a second time, Dominica declared at 308 for 8. Kavem Hodge made 76, Kershaki Jno Lewis â 71 and Liam Sebastian â 52. Denis George grabbed 4 for 69, bowling for Grenada.
Asked to make an imposing 344, Grenada was shot out for 70. Andre Fletcher scored 40.
Vincent Lewis took 3 for 5, Shillingford â 3 for 14 and Sebastian â 2 for 22, bowling for Dominica.
In their opening fixture, Dominica ran over St Lucia at the Sion Hill Playing Field.
Johnson Charles with 52 and Keddy Lesporis â 49, helped St Lucia to 203 for 9 declared. Shane Shillingford took 4 for 52.
Dominica declared their response at 324 for 8, with Jelarni Robinson making 152. Dalton Polius took 4 for 104.
In arrears by 121, St Lucia was dismantled for 60, by the bowling of Mervin Matthew with 5 for 19 and Shillingford â 4 for 12.
Meanwhile, the Vincentians, who last won the tournament in 2013, beat St Lucia outright on Sunday at the Park Hill Playing Field.
The host dismissed St Lucia for 119, as they went in pursuit of 201. Keron Cottoy bagged 5 for 32 and Alston Bobb â 4 for 25. Only Tarryck Gabriel, with 45, showed any resistance.
Batting first, St Vincent and the Grenadines only made 134. Atticus Browne top scored with 42. Larry Edwards took 3 for 12, Craig Emmanuel â 2 for 11, Dornan Edwards â 2 for 18 and Dalton Polius â 2 for 27.
In response, St Lucia scored 148; Craigg Emmanuel made 37. Bobb had 5 for 34 and Cottoy â 3 for 53.
Batting a second time, St Vincent and the Grenadines posted 186; Sunil Ambris got 52 and Atticus Browne â 48.
Dornan Edwards had 3 for 53, Larry Edwards â 3 for 59 and Dalton Polius â 2 for 14.
When the tournament bowled off on Thursday, St Vincent and the Grenadines gathered 11 points in a first innings win over Grenada at the Arnos Vale One Playing Field.
Grenada, on the back of 147 from Devon Smith, Emmanuel Stewart â 58 and Denis Smith â 33, tallied 292 all out.
Alston Bobb took 4 for 80, Keron Cottoy â 3 for 71(including a hat-trick) and Kenneth Dember â 2 for 52.
Cottoy then stroked 150, Sunil Ambris, 87 and Dember, 77, to see their team to 384 for 7 declared.
There were two wickets apiece for Josh Thomas, Nellon Pascal and Deron Hypolite.
