Shaffiqua Maloney victorious in CAC Juvenile Championships

Vincentian athlete Shaffiqua Maloney topped the female 13-14 category of the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Juvenile Championships last weekend, staged at the Sentro Deportivo Korsou Stadium in Willemstad, Curacao.{{more}}

Maloney, 14, a student of the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, amassed 4,204 points in the Heptathlon, to outdo 38 other competitors.

She clocked 10.36 seconds in the 80 m; leapt 4.96 m in the Long Jump and threw a distance of 9.99 m in the Shot Putt. Maloney also ran 9.60 seconds in the 80 m Hurdles and recorded a height of 1.35 m in the High Jump. In the other events, Maloney flung the baseball 56.00 m and ran 3 minutes 16.00 seconds in the 1,000 m.

The other Vincentians all finished down the field.

Kwan Stewart, who competed in the male 13-14, was 16th out of the 39 athletes who were registered.

Stewart totalled 4,586 points.

Another Vincentian who was in that age category, Javon Rawlins, placed 28th. He compiled 4,184 in the seven events.

St Vincent and the Grenadines was represented in the 11-12 age group by Zamesha Myle, Ozem Olliver and Deraj Williams. They were involved in the Pentathlon.

Myle, the female Vincentian athlete in the Pentathlon, was only able to put together 2,276 points, which put her 23rd of the 38 competitors.

Olliver and Williams ended 33rd and 36th respectively, out of a total of 39 participants.

Olliver’s total was 2,352 and Williams recorded 2,273 points.

The team was coached by Rawlson Morgan and Santa Cruickshank travelled as manager/chaperone.(RT)
