Mitchell re-elected as BBA President

Sabrina Mitchell was re-elected unopposed as President of the Bequia Basketball Association to serve another two-year term from 2012 to 2014, when that organization held its Annual General Meeting last Wednesday, May 16, at the Bequia District Council in Port Elizabeth.{{more}}

Mitchell has been at the helm of the BBA since 2001, and has never been opposed for the top position.

Mitchell told SEARCHLIGHT last Sunday that her newly elected executive will continue its focus on the Under-16 Division.

The long-standing president restated the need for “continuity and sustainability”, hence the emphasis on the youths.

Mitchell, whilst admitting her input in making the BBA arguably the most efficient and stable sporting association in St Vincent and the Grenadines, said she could not have done it on her own, praising her officers who have served over the years.

Acknowledging that she cannot go on forever, Mitchell said that her wish is that the BBA will survive after she has come to the end of her tenure.

And, she is confident that a lot of capacity building was achieved to ensure that this comes to fruition.

Apart from heading the BBA, Mitchell also serves on the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Executive as Secretary General and is a Central Board member on the FIBA Americas Executive. She is also a Board Member of Adonal Foyle’s Kerosene Lamp Foundation.

Mitchell got the unwavering support from the thirty persons, representing fifteen teams, who were present at last Wednesday’s AGM.

Joining Mitchell in being elected unopposed was former Games Secretary Cornelius Farrell, who was elected Vice President, taking over from Junior Sutton.

Sutton was the first President of the BBA, when the organization came into being in 1999.

Likewise, Colson Peters and Monica Peters were re-elected unopposed as the BBA’s Treasurer and Public Relations Officer, respectively.

Vanessa Browne is the BBA’s new General Secretary, replacing Solana Gooding.

Michael Peniston got an upgrade from the players’ representative to the post of Games Secretary.

The position of Assistant General Secretary was filled by Anthony Sargeant, in place of Keithroy Lavia, with Mark Hutchins elected as the players’ representative.

Shem Ollivierre and Kelan Edwards retained their posts as Committee Members, and are joined by Keithroy Lavia.

Apart from the elections of officers, there were the presentation of the financial statements for the last fiscal year, reports on the past year, and discussions and preparations for the upcoming 14th Annual Championship, scheduled for July 14 to September 2.

The Bequia Basketball set-up has a total of 180 registered players. Of this total, 72 are in the Under 16 age group. (RT)
