The fully grassed sand-based football field adds to the astro-turf football field already established.

Measuring 110 yards by 60 yards, the football field will be used to carry on the programme of the Liverpool Academy, which has been established at the Buccament Bay Resort.

Local Director of the Academy Roger Gurley, at Saturday’s opening, stated that the new football field will soon be fully utilized, but for the time being, there is still work to be done to make it more fit for play.

Senator Elvis Charles, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, with specific responsibility for Youth and Sports, who made the first kick-off, welcomed the addition of the field, and expressed the wish that it could be developed to the point that top clubs could double up by using the facility, as well as the Buccament Bay Resort, as part of their pre-season training and conditioning.

Also present at the opening of the newest facility was General Manager of the Buccament Bay Resort Kevin Smith, who thanked all those involved in making the field a reality.

The installation of the football field at the Buccament Bay Resort follows closely on the heels of the commissioning of the Cricket nets last March, when the Australian and West Indies Cricket teams were in town for the exciting three One Day Internationals, which were played March 16, 18, and 20 at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.

Members of the Liverpool Under-18 Academy team and their officials, who were on the island at the time, as well as some forty young footballers drawn from the Buccament Bay Secondary, the Du Bois Government, the Clare Valley Government and the Questelles Government, were on hand to witness the opening of the football field.

The Buccament Bay Resort also has a Tennis facility, which is endorsed by former Wimbledon champion, Pat Cash.

The quartet of facilities is part of the Harlequin Sports Academy. (RT)
