Players excel in tennis tourney

The CK Greaves/ Metrocint Insurance Christmas Tennis Championships, crowned off a packed 2005 programme for aspiring junior players here.

Many used the final competition to better position themselves on the local rankings. They will know their destiny later this month when the standings will be released.{{more}}

Several of them enhanced their chances with titles at the most recent outing.

Halima Michael copped the Girls Under-10 singles along with the Under-14 doubles. Michael doubles partner was the improving Daneya Charles. Charles was justly rewarded as the championships’ Most Improved Female player.

Also in the winners’ circle was Roxanne Russell, who secured the Girls Under -18 Singles and Doubles titles. She, along with Michelle Gun- Munroe combined their skills in the pairs segment.

The emerging Jerand Phills continues to impress also with two titles. He took the Boys Under-14 Singles. Then followed that up with a doubles triumph with Nicotello Providence in that same age grouping. Phills added the title of Most Improved male to his growing list of accomplishments.

But it was 12 year-old Whitney Harry who stole the spotlight at the presentation ceremony last Saturday night at the National Tennis Center at Villa. She captured both the Under-12 and Under-14 Singles titles. She crowned off her achievements by taking home the eminent Challenge Trophy.

She was named ahead of the other 72 players who participated in the Championships.

Zachary Williams made her name onto the honours roll with the Girls Under-10 crown. Fabrice George won the Boys Under-12 Singles and Corey Huggins the Boys Under-18.The Under-18 title was taken by the duo of Agostini Soleyn and Jahmai St. Hillaire.

The Under-16 Singles were in the grasp of Danielle Cupid and Justin Gun Munroe. They took the Girls and Boys titles respectively.

The young players will have no shortage of action in 2006, as another crammed agenda is in the offing.

Apart from the local championships, several regional outings have been listed for their participation.
