Better Health Centre marks 10 years in operation
On Sunday July 19, Dr Jose Melissa Davy’s Better Health Centre marks 10 years in operation.
The office, located at Arnos Vale, is run by Dr Davy with the assistance of Dr Najah Peters.
Dr Davy holds a master’s degree in infectious diseases, but her practice is mainly that of a general practitioner who caters for the holistic health of her patients.
She deals with things like sexually transmitted diseases and infections, tuberculosis, prostrate examinations, breast exams, incision and drainage; she also does electrocardiograms. Sailors and students may also have their medicals done at the centre.
“We do general consultations for any age,” Dr Davy told SEARCHLIGHT recently, “I can handle anything.”
Better Health Centre is open 10 am to 6 pm daily and on Saturdays from 9 am to 3 pm.
Dr Davy told SEARCHLIGHT that she is not in competition with other doctors and although she has a master’s degree in infectious diseases, her focus is placed on all aspects of the human body.
“Doctoring is not a competition. While others may say it’s a competition, there is food for everybody to eat,” said Dr Davy who added that sometimes a specialty makes a physician forget other issues relating to health but she always focuses on the entire human body.
Dr Davy hails from Enhams. She is a past student of the Brighton and Stubbs primary schools, the Girls’ High School (GHS) and the A’ Level College (called sixth form back then).
After finishing her A’ Level studies, she took up a job as a student radiographer at the then Kingstown General Hospital. After nine months there, she went to Cuba where she spent seven years at the Carlos J Finlay University of Medical Sciences after which she returned to St Vincent and completed an internship at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH). She then returned to Cuba where she attended the Pedro Kouri Institute (for infectious disease).
