Danroy Spence –proud of his 40 rewarding years at ECGC
Not many persons can boast of working with a company for 40 years and even fewer can say they love the job they do if they have been at a company for that long.
So, that is why Danroy Spence is so unique.
âWorking with the Eastern Caribbean Group of Companies is a very good thing for me. … you get good treatment and once you do your job, you donât have a problem,â he said during a recent interview.
Spence began working with the Eastern Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC), then called the East Caribbean Flour Mills, on September 1, 1977 and he is proud of his years of service to the company as a mechanic.
âIt is 40 years since I am working here. I was here when it opened its doors,â said the senior mechanic, somewhat nostalgically, adding, âIt was not like this when we started; it was just the flour mill alone and it was a lot of ups and downs and we ironed out a lot of problems with the machines and we got through and went smooth and nice….â
Spence said after the flour mill was established, the feed mill was introduced, and he worked on the machines in that mill to get them going.
âThen, couple years after, we move over to a rice mill,â he said, noting the growth of the company.
Spence works with about 18 other persons in his department and received his training at the then St Vincent Technical College, now the Division of Technical and Vocational Education of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College.
He revealed that he worked for the St Vincent Electricity Services (VINLEC) for three years before moving to ECGC, where his first supervisor was Darius Dickson.
Originally from Spring Village, Spence described the company as one that takes care of you.
âThe benefits we get here make us different from other places. We have health insurance; they take care of you if you are sick, you can go to the doctor, get proper attendance and refunds,â said Spence, noting that medical care is just one of the many benefits.
