Prime the pump

by Karen James

Does saying thank you matters to customers? Absolutely!

It’s impactful. It solidifies that there’s a two-way relationship and makes customers feel valued. Most customers don’t leave because of what the competitor is offering, but because there’s no connection to the business.

A ‘thank you’ doesn’t have to be long or carefully articulated to have financial benefits. Creating a good customer experience is a prime investment.

Recently, someone said to me “I’ve never advertised. My location does it for me.” Another said “I’m satisfied with what I make, I don’t need to advertise.” You may be on top today, but there’s always someone who is aspiring to be better than you and eventually will be, if you don’t prime your pump. Put something in, no matter how small and you’ll get something out. Strive to be the best and remain the best. Find ways to reinvent your business.

We’ve partnered with several winners and nominees of the Best of SVG to say ‘thank you’. Some businesses never thought of it, but welcomed the nudge; others, even after being nudged, never budged. Henry Ford (1863-1947), founder of Ford Motor Company, once said “the man who stops advertising to save money is like the man who stops the clock to save time.”

A business creates its own good and bad times. When business is good, advertise; when business is bad, advertising is not an option.
