Last Wednesday, students of the Teachers’ College (now the Division of Teacher Education of the SVG Community College), came together to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the school, and this country’s 38th year of independence.

Burke, who was the feature speaker at the event, said that teachers must find ways to use the talents that were on display during the cultural presentations, to make learning more enjoyable in the classrooms for their students.

He further noted that he believes that teachers make the greatest contribution to nation building.

When she addressed the ceremony, Director of the Community College, Dr Veronica Marks said that teachers are human resource developers, because they developing the minds of our children.

She lauded the achievement of the Teachers’ College, saying that it has come a long way over the 43 years of its existence.

Dean of the school, Dr Alson Jack said that while the school has progressed, it cannot afford to sit on its laurels. He said that he recognized that the school has moved from offering certificate education to the stage of offering associate degrees, and he longs for the day when a Bachelor of Arts programme will be offered at the school.

Dr Jack said that the teachers must be trained to face the challenges of today’s world.

Outstanding educator and former Chief Education Officer Festus Toney was also honoured during the programme.

But no doubt, the honouring ceremony and the well-delivered speeches aside, the cultural performances stole the show. (KJ)
