Shelly Ann Oliver, 31, of Mt Greenan earned four CXC passes this year through the Adult Literacy Programme. Oliver gained a grade two in Social Studies, Home Management and Food and Nutrition and a grade three in English A. But she does not want to stop there, “I want to do four more next year,” she stated. Those four would include Math, Information Technology, Human and Social Biology and Principles of Business.{{more}}

Oliver became pregnant at 16 and had to finish school at the third form of the Intermediate High School. She continued with evening classes, but had to stop due to financial difficulties.

Motivated by her mobilisor, she entered into the Adult Literacy Programme. Although her experience has been a good one, Oliver admits she faced difficulties during the programme when she became pregnant with her fourth child but was encouraged by her facilitators. “They were very helpful. I decided that I was going to stop, but they gave me encouragement.”

Oliver, who was “surprised” at her four passes, encourages persons in her situation to never give up. “If I had given up, I wouldn’t be here,” she stated.

She has ambitions to enter into the nursing field. She also expressed thanks to all her facilitators and others involved in the Adult Literacy Programme who helped her in achieving her goals.
