That same day 25 years ago, the late Prime Minister of St.Vincent and the Grenadines the Right Hon. Robert Milton Cato and Premier H.E.Sun, Yun-suan of Taiwan, signed a communiqué to establish diplomatic relations.
Numerous commendations have been showered on Cato over the years for his insight and vision to initiate the agreement, which has brought much benefits to both countries.
On one occasion, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves ushering praise on Cato said: “Even then he recognized Taiwan’s vast economic potential.”
Subsequent administrations have widely continued the policy initiated in this regard by our nation’s founding father be it the Unity Labour Party (ULP) or New Democratic Party (NDP).
Many benefits have been derived from the long lasting friendship.
Taiwan’s assistance has touched every facet of Vincentian life. The Taiwanese are contributing to the Youth Empowerment Service (YES), education, training, cultural development, the international airport at Argyle, the Cross Country Road, the Learning Resource Centres, fisheries, Science and Technology, the Rabacca Dry River Bridge and agriculture development.
On the other hand St.Vincent and the Grenadines has been giving Taiwan tremendous support at the United Nations, and calls for them to have a permanent place in other organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations..
On his maiden trip to St.Vincent and the Grenadines, President Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan stated: “It is our earnest hope and expectations that the enduring friendship between our two countries will not just last 25 years nor 25 plus 25 years but forever into eternity.”
Prime Minister Gonsalves noted that the president’s visit will deepen the ties that exist between St.Vincent and the Grenadines and Taiwan.
SEARCHLIGHT extends congratulations to the governments as they celebrate the silver jubilee anniversary.
