Studies have shown that fluoride reduces cavities in both adults and children. Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in all water sources, even the sea and like any other nutrient, it is safe and effective when used appropriately. The fluoride we use in dentistry can be obtained in two forms, topical and systemic. Topical fluoride acts directly on the surface of the teeth in the mouth, making them more resistant to decay, these include toothpaste, mouthwash and professionally applied gels. The systemic fluorides are those that are swallowed and ingested into the body, these help in the strengthening of the adult teeth while they are being formed; this is more beneficial to children. Systemic fluorides can also give topical protection, as fluoride is present in saliva, which continually bathes the teeth. Systemic fluorides include water fluoridation, tablets, drops and fluoridated salt.

It must be said that if used incorrectly, an overdose of fluoride can cause fluorosis of the teeth (appearing as white spots). Consulting a dentist first can enlighten you as to whether or not you are receiving enough fluoride and recommend which one is best for you. So I venture to say, fluoride everyday keeps the cavities away.
