Mixing your intellect with dirt

It is a wonderful thing to see the educational level of a nation increase while young people stay in school longer to advance themselves. It is not good however to see young people pursue an education and leave school with the misguided notion that the only way to make money is to obtain an office job.

There is a certain level of false prestige that is attached to someone in a business suit and there is a certain level of scorn attached to someone who gets dirty in order to earn a living. It is funny however that the dirty jobs in many cases can earn much more than someone in a clean office environment but false pride instilled by the generations before could be the down fall of this generation.{{more}}

With plans on the way for an international airport and a cross-country road, young people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, must wake up and see the colour of money not the dirt associated with earning that money. The people who learn to think out of the box are the ones who tend to make it bigger and reach further. The foreigners who will have to be brought in from other islands will only see the colour of the money when they get paid at the end of the month.

According to the Statutory Rules and Orders No. 12 of 2003, the minimum wage for a clerk in an office is approximately $600 per month, while a skilled tradesman such as a carpenter or mason earns a minimum of $60 per day. If you take into consideration the current boom in construction today, a skilled mason or carpenter can get $100 a day or more.

The Excuses

• Yes you have the 8, 9 or 12 subjects

• yes, you went to Community College and still have no job,

• yes, I know that there are people who only give their children and their friend’s children the jobs whenever they become available,

• yes, you don’t know anyone in the bank to give you a loan to start a business but have you thought about mixing your intellect with dirt?

No more excuses

Instead of complaining, try to see the obvious opportunities in front of you. They might not be glamorous and quite frankly it will seem hopeless at times and your friends and family will probably laugh but the minute you experience some level of success – and you will, there will be no shortage of “friends” who will help you spend your money.

Stay tuned next week we will explore some uncommon money making opportunities for you to consider.
