managing after work events

It’s that time of year again and companies will begin to have office gatherings to kick off the holiday season. And every year there are always persons who manage to embarrass themselves and possibly jeopardize chances of building alliances within the company. So before you put on your party clothes keep the following in mind.

1. Maintain your professional decorum at all times. Even at after hour events, people are watching;

2. Always carry extra business cards. Be prepared to do business at any time. Give only one card unless the person asks for more;{{more}}

3. Practice your 30-second commercial. You should be able to articulate what you do in 30 seconds or less;

4. Bring a GREAT attitude. Be up-beat; do not talk about your professional or personal problems;

5. Limit alcohol consumption. Set a one-drink maximum or avoid alcohol completely;

6. Set networking goals. Plan to meet 3 to 5 people, and to build quality relationships after the event;

7. Avoid discussing religion and politics. Talk about career goals, sports, business news. Listen more than you talk;

8. Eat but don’t over indulge. Your time should be spent mingling, not eating;

9. Offer clean, dry handshakes. Hold your drink in your left hand so the right hand is always free and warm.
