New Year Resolutions

It is that time of the year when we all make some resolutions as to how we are going to change or improve our quality of life for the new year. Are these resolutions about human relations and attitudes? Or are they about food, life style, health and fitness?

We have grappled all year with human relations. In our world we must interact with other persons some of whom we have chosen to be around us and others who are not of our choice. However, as the saying goes, no man is an island and we are dependent on others for so many things in our lives.{{more}} We have improved our lives because of the contributions and sacrifices of those who have gone before us and we benefit from our compatriots.

Some of those persons who we interact with will have some characteristics and traits which are similar or dissimilar to ours but regardless of our differences, we have to live peaceably with everyone for our continued existence and for the preservation of the human species. Moreover, for a better life and good relations we must have some concern and respect for our fellowmen.

We as a people in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have been known for our warmth, hospitality, and generosity towards others. Are we the same or have we changed? The modern world with its expanding technology continues to have a tremendous effect on us and there is no doubt about the influence, good and bad, of television in our lives. We are becoming a cell phone culture as thousands of Vincentians become connected. Have we improved our relations with others? Or do we allow the stress of every day living to take its toll on us?

We do not see or experience too often the politeness and helpfulness that are expected of those in the world around us and especially in the service industry. Far too often we come across persons who take out their frustration on a hapless customer/client. We are the product of our experience and sometimes we consciously or unconsciously recycle our bad experience. Good human relation is the most beautiful and satisfying feeling one can experience. It enriches our lives and gives that happiness that surpasses all material things. We can all consciously make an effort to improve our relations with others in the New year. Forget our own worries for a while and put others before us.

We are all excited about food. It is important for our sustenance and central to all celebrations, but with excesses, it could be dangerous to our health. Hence many persons are going to make resolutions about the quantity of their intake of food. They are also going make decisions about the type of food that they consume. Too much sugars, starches and salt could cause some of the diseases such as diabetes, hypertension which afflict so many Vincentians today.

Many persons are very health and fitness conscious. We are persuaded by many health educators of the importance of exercise as a way of keeping fit and healthy. Fitness clubs are beginning to take root but we are still reminded that simple walking will do the trick without a charge attached.
