In memory of a ‘Fallen Soldier’
by Donald De Riggs
Donnie De Freitas will always be remembered in amateur radio circles in St Vincent and the Grenadines as the first Telecoms Officer, having been trained in Cuba.
During his tenure as Telecoms Officer, he encouraged and guided all persons who were interested in two-way radio to become licensed radio amateurs and for this we are truly grateful.
On a personal note, he was witty and had a great sense of humour. When it was business, he was straightforward, ‘No’ was ‘No’ and ‘Yes’ was not ‘Maybe’. In sport he was an accomplished Table Tennis player and it took the best players to win Donnie, he was that good.
We will all miss his friendly demeanor, sharp intellect but yet humble personality.
On behalf of the amateur radio (Ham Radio) community, we want to collectively express our sincerest condolences to his son, wife and surviving siblings. To his friends in Fiji and around the world, we have lost a great man, gone too soon, but the Good Lord knows best.
Do be strong in this time of sadness and great loss.
