BEST WEEK EVER:
Dr Godwin Friday is surely deserving of this accolade this week, having been selected as both Leader of the Opposition and president of the New Democratic Party after Arnhim Eustace finally decided to let someone else have a go at leading the party. The nation is now watching and waiting Bob Marley style to see whether Dr Friday can give the NDP the much-needed boost it will require to come out victorious in the 2020 general elections. The task is not impossible; Friday just needs to come up with a sound political strategy and soothe over old rifts to bring more unity and cohesion to the party.{{more}}
Runner-Up:
On a global scale, SVG has been having a spate of bad press recently, given the worrying spate of gun violence here. So, it was encouraging to see foreign press responding positively to Prince Harryâs one-day visit here. Especially given that his visits to Antigua and Barbuda and St Kitts and Nevis garnered some not-so-favourable attention.
Worst Week Ever:
The trough system that last week passed over St Vincent and the Grenadines truly delivered a thrashing to the community of Sandy Bay. Houses were destroyed, families displaced, years of hard work and sacrifice washed away in the raging river waters. Itâs definitely a hard pill to swallow. The silver lining in all this is how many persons and groups (both private citizens and the business community) are rallying together to help Sandy Bay residents back on their feet. We know the damage will take some time to rectify, but this is a promising start.
Runner-up:
The uniformed organizations that turned up at the Cruise Ship Terminal to greet His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales (Prince Harry) were definitely left with a bitter taste in their mouths at the experience. Most persons were expecting the Prince to walk through the throng of smiling, waving children and young people. Instead, he was whisked through in a dark SUV, with the majority only getting a glimpse of his pale face and waving hand. After lining up for hours in the unforgiving heat of the sun, one can fully understand why many children were left in tears, and parents left fuming! Perhaps the local coordinators should have made it clear from the beginning that this was going to be the course of events?
