BEST WEEK EVER:
The week that was
October 18, 2016

BEST WEEK EVER:

The lowly breadfruit is in the headlines again, but this time not as a metaphor for the mentality of Vincentians, but because of a cottage industry set up at Mt Grenan by two outstanding young Vincentian men. Saboto Caesar and Deron Grant put together heads, hearts and muscle and have come up with breadfruit fries, a product that is taking SVG and the southern Caribbean by storm. From food trucks to fast food restaurants to fine dining pool side, breadfruit fries now have pride of place on the menu. How’s that for adding value to agricultural produce?{{more}}

Runner-up:

Vincentians have a proud tradition of being the valedictorians at the campuses of the University of the West Indies and this year, Elizabeth Bullock and Calvon Charles are keeping the Vincy flag flying high. On Thursday and Friday this week, Bullock and Charles, former students of the Girls’ High School and the St Vincent Grammar School, will deliver the valedictory speeches for their respective faculties at the St Augustine Campus of the UWI.

Elizabeth, the standard bearer in science and technology and Calvon, out front in management studies, lead the dozens of smart and motivated young Vincentians who graduated from colleges and universities this year, and now must put their shoulders to the wheel to build the SVG we know we can become.

WORST WEEK EVER:

The phenomenon of court admissible videotaped evidence has come to St Vincent and the Grenadines, making last week the worst week ever for those Vincentian police officers who take the “force” in the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force literally. They will learn, as have the cops in the United States, that in this age of a smartphone in the hands of every other citizen, chances are, if they mess up, their actions will be caught on tape. This is a good thing, which perhaps, hopefully, will lead to a reduction in reports of police brutality and begin the long process of rebuilding the confidence of our people in the justice system in general and the police force in particular.

Runner-up:

After being charged with the murder of 10-month-old Mozarie Lee, Martin ‘Jahson’ James and Richard ‘Shrek’ McFee are going to be very uncomfortable for next few months.

The two men had to be escorted out of the Serious Offences Court under heavy police presence last week, after claiming that persons were staked out at the court and would try to kill them.

Since being remanded, the men have been placed in protective custody at the prison, after they claimed that prisoners want to take their lives.

The duo, innocent until proven guilty, seem already to have been tried and found guilty in the court of public opinion.

It appears that the two are not safe anywhere they go.

If I had a question in SVG Parliament

…If I had a question in Parliament I would ask the Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment what measures are being put in place to ensure that graduates of medical schools who apply for jobs here in St Vincent and the Grenadines have passed an internationally recognized standardized test before they are employed.

Media Watch

Online news sites are popping up all over social media, providing Vincentians with news as soon as it breaks. While the quality of journalism produced by the different media houses varies widely, why, in their quest to find material to post on a daily basis, do some of these ‘news’ sites think it is okay to sit on their buts and just copy entire stories, word for word, from those media houses that actually do the hard work of researching, verifying and writing?

And by the way, because you give credit doesn’t make it right. Clicking on the share button is easier than copying and pasting. Do the right thing!
